چکیده

aim: the healthy ranges for serum alanine aminotransferase (alt) levels are less well studied. the aim of this study was to define the upper limit of normal (uln) for serum alt levels, and to assess factors associated with serum alt activity in apparently healthy blood donors. methods: a total of 1939 blood donors were included. alt measurements were performed for all cases using the same laboratory method. healthy ranges for alt levels were computed from the population at lowest risk for liver disease. univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate associations between clinical factors and alt levels. results: serum alt activity was independently associated with body mass index (bmi) and male gender, but not associated with age. association of alt with bmi was more prominent in males than in females. upper limit of normal for non-overweight women (bmi of less than 25) was 34 u/l, and for non-overweight men was 40 u/l. conclusion: serum alt is strongly associated with sex and bmi. the normal range of alt should be defined for male and female separately. â

Gender Differences in Healthy Ranges for Serum Alanine Aminotransferase Levels in Adolescence

BACKGROUND & AIMS There is a worldwide epidemic of obesity among adolescents who subsequently are at increased risk for the development of non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is the most frequently used test for screening these individuals, but no age and gender-specific upper limits of normal (ULN) based on healthy population data in children are...

Serum alanine transaminase (ALT) reference ranges estimated from blood donors.

It has been suggested that an increase in serum alanine transaminase (ALT) activity in blood donors may identify infection with non-A, non-B hepatitis. To facilitate identification of such donors, the reference range for ALT was measured on a Technicon SMAC 1 Analyser, using serum from 364 blood donors and 567 plasmapheresis donors. The distribution of ALT activities displayed a positive skewne...

Study of serum alanine-aminotransferase levels in blood donors in Spain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Serum alanine-aminotransferase (ALT) is being used as a surrogate test for preventing post-transfusion viral hepatitis. However, ALT elevation is influenced by many factors. We have studied ALT levels in 1,036 consecutive blood donors to determine their association with gender, obesity, and hepatitis virus infection markers. DESIGN AND METHODS In each donation asparta...

Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and y-glutamyltransferase (y-GT) activities in north London blood donors

Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and y-glutamyltransferase (y-GT) activities were measured in over 2000 north London blood donors. The results were compared with those from the United States. The percentage of the total donor population with ALT activities above 40 IU/1 in 1986 was greater than that found in our earlier studies in 1973 and 1982 (4*6% compared with 2-8% and 3 1 % , respectiv...

Serum Uric Acid, Alanine Aminotransferase, Hemoglobin and Red Blood Cell Count Levels in Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome

Purpose. The pathogenesis of pseudoexfoliation (PEX), the most common cause of secondary glaucoma, has not been clearly identified, but there is increasing evidence that points out the role of oxidative stress. The aim of this study is to evaluate some of the most commonly used blood parameters, hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell count (RBC), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and uric acid (UA) leve...
